Conserving 137 Acres of Forest

Olympic Forest Coalition, the Center for Responsible Forestry, the Northwest Watershed Institute and members of the public are asking Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz to defer the harvest of 137 acres of incredible second growth, naturally regenerated mature and structurally complex forest in the Big Quilcene River / Quilcene Bay watershed.

The “Penny Wise” sale will go to auction and be cut this harvest season. We need time to find a solution to saving our forests and replacing much needed income for our students in school today, without damaging the future of generations to come.

According to science, our forests are, literally, the most important forests in the United States and the world at sequestering and reserving carbon. We are asking for more time and adequate policies to save these last few remnants of forest in Jefferson County while we face the challenge of funding essential services. We need time.
